App launcher replaces Google black navigation bar

Google has removed their home page top navigation bar and it's been replaced by a new android style app launcher.This may be confusing for users because of its  unusual look.The horizontal black bar for navigation to Search, Images, Maps, Gmail, Play, YouTube have all been moved to an app launcher menu.

Do you feel this way smart ? I'm little confused losing the balck navigation bar.
